Township Office Closed for Veterans Day
The Township Office will be closed on Monday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day.
In the United States, Veterans Day is a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Here are some facts about Veterans Day:
- While World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919, fighting ended seven months earlier when a temporary cessation of hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”
- November 11 was first commemorated as Armistice Day in 1919, to honor veterans of WWI. On May 13, 1938, Armistice Day became a legal holiday.
- On June 1, 1954, Public Law 380 replaced the word “Armistice” with the word “Veterans”, officially making November 11 Veterans Day. After the Uniform Holiday Law 0f 1968 temporarily made the date flexible, November 11 was cemented as the permanent date on September 20, 1975, when President Gerald Ford signed it into law.
- Veterans Day is the official spelling of the holiday. It does not include an apostrophe but does include an “s” at the end of “veterans” because it is not a day that “belongs” to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans.
