Township Office Closed for Labor Day

The Township Office will be closed on Monday, September 2, in observance of Labor Day.

In the United States, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.  Here are some facts about Labor Day:

  1. Labor Day became a federal holiday on June 28, 1894 when President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.
  2. On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers in New York City took unpaid time off to march in protest of unsafe working conditions, long hours, and low pay.  This protest became the first Labor Day parade is U.S. history.
  3. While both Peter McGuire and Matthew Maguire have been credited with the idea of Labor Day, the true founder has yet to be identified.
  4. Labor Day weekend has come to symbolize the unofficial end of summer, and is celebrated with parties, street parades, and athletic events.
