In the United States, Independence Day commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.  Here are some facts about Independence Day:

  1. While the Declaration of Independence was signed and formally adopted on July 4, 1776, the vote for independence came two days earlier.  On July 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress passed the Lee Resolution, named for Richard Henry Lee of Virginia and also known as “The Resolution for Independence”.
  2. The tradition of setting off fireworks on Independence Day began in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, during the first organized celebration of Independence Day.
  3. In 1781, Massachusetts became the first state to make Independence Day an official state holiday.  Congress made Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.
  4. Since the late 19th century, the 4th of July has become a major focus of leisure activities and a common occasion for family get-togethers, often involving fireworks and outdoor barbecues.  The most common symbol of the holiday is the American flag.
