Got a tick? Get a pic.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services provides tick identification at no charge to Michigan residents.

  1. Remove the tick and find a well-lit area.
  2. Aim the camera as close to the tick as possible and take a picture.
  3. Flip the tick over and take a picture of the tick’s belly.
  4. Email both pictures to MDHHS-Bugs@michigan.gov with the following information:
    • The date the tick was found
    • If the tick is alive or dead
    • The location the tick exposure likely occurred (city, county, state, type of area)
    • What the tick was on (Person, animal, or other)

The MDHHS staff will make all attempts to identify the tick after you send the email.
