Job Description: Facilities Maintenance Worker

Department: Maintenance and Facilities
Reports to: Township Supervisor
Status: Full-time
Pay range: $25–$30 per hour, depending on experience
Schedule: May include evenings, weekends, or on-call winter work as needed

Position Summary

The Facilities Maintenance Worker helps maintain Township buildings, grounds, equipment, vehicles, and public properties. The position performs routine indoor and outdoor maintenance, seasonal groundskeeping, snow and ice control, and support duties at the Transfer Station and Cemetery. The employee also assists with Transfer Station and composting records, coordinates Cemetery work with the appropriate parties, supports fire-safety inspections, and helps protect Township property, tools, appliances, and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Grounds and property maintenance

  • Mow designated Township properties and perform routine landscaping and outdoor maintenance.
  • Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment, including mowers, weed trimmers, backpack blowers, and related tools.
  • Maintain Township properties through tasks such as topsoil placement, grass seeding or repair, debris removal, and general upkeep.
  • Help preserve Township buildings, grounds, tools, appliances, and other public property.
  • Identify maintenance needs, unsafe conditions, or damage and report them to the supervisor.

Snow and ice control

  • Plow snow and apply salt or other approved materials at designated Township locations.
  • Operate snowblowers and other snow-removal equipment.
  • Monitor weather conditions and respond to winter maintenance needs as assigned.
  • Maintain and properly store snow-removal equipment and supplies.

Facilities maintenance, fire inspections, and property security

  • Perform routine general maintenance and minor repairs at Township facilities and properties.
  • Serve as the point of contact for scheduled monthly fire-extinguisher inspections and annual fire-suppression inspections.
  • Coordinate inspection scheduling and access, communicate with inspection providers, and maintain or submit inspection records as directed.
  • Serve as a point of contact for the security of Township buildings and property.
  • Monitor and report security concerns, damage, or conditions that may affect the safety or security of Township property.
  • Recommend security improvements to the Township Supervisor and assist with implementing recommendations approved by the Supervisor.
  • Report repair needs that require a licensed contractor or specialized service.

Transfer Station and composting support

  • Assist Township staff with Transfer Station operations when needed, including helping customers and supporting customer transactions in accordance with Township procedures.
  • Help maintain the Transfer Station property and surrounding grounds.
  • Assist with EGLE-related compliance activities for the Transfer Station and composting operations, as assigned.
  • Maintain, organize, and submit Transfer Station and composting records, logs, and related documentation as directed.
  • Notify the supervisor of missing records, operational concerns, or conditions that may require follow-up.

Cemetery support

  • Coordinate with the Cemetery excavator and Cemetery Coordinator to provide assistance when needed.
  • Perform Cemetery groundskeeping and maintenance work that is not contracted to another provider.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain the Cemetery’s watering system as assigned, including turning water on and off and monitoring water use.
  • Report unusual water usage, leaks, or other maintenance concerns to the supervisor.
  • Observe and report suspected Cemetery ordinance violations to the appropriate Township official. This position does not independently investigate or enforce ordinances.

Vehicles, equipment, and operational support

  • Assist with arranging Township vehicles for scheduled service and maintenance.
  • Drive a Township truck and trailer when assigned and when properly licensed and authorized.
  • Help Township staff with special or unusual operational needs, including transporting equipment or supplies.
  • Use Township equipment safely and report damage, maintenance needs, or unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, orderly, and secure condition.

Other duties

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support Township operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or a relevant combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with groundskeeping, landscaping, facilities maintenance, snow removal, or equipment operation.
  • Ability to safely operate or learn to operate mowers, weed trimmers, backpack blowers, snowblowers, snowplows, and other assigned equipment.
  • Ability to perform physical work outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and follow established procedures.
  • Ability to communicate courteously with residents, customers, vendors, and Township staff.
  • Valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets Township requirements. A license or endorsement appropriate for operating a Township truck and trailer may be required, depending on the vehicle and applicable requirements.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures, Township policies, and supervisor direction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating a truck and trailer.
  • Experience with snowplowing, salting, and snowblowing.
  • Experience with cemetery, park, or public-property maintenance.
  • Experience maintaining operational or regulatory records.
  • Basic mechanical or repair skills.
  • Experience assisting customers or handling customer transactions.

Physical and Work Requirements

The position involves regular outdoor work and may require standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and carrying tools or materials. Duties may require working in hot, cold, wet, or snowy conditions; operating power equipment; and responding to seasonal work needs. The Township will consider reasonable accommodations consistent with applicable requirements.

The employee is expected to work safely, use Township property responsibly, treat the public and coworkers professionally, protect confidential or sensitive information encountered in the course of work, and promptly report hazards, equipment problems, security concerns, or damage to Township property.
